Perth is home to some amazing dive locations, from underwater shipwrecks to shallow lagoons, you can see some pretty amazing scenes when you are scuba diving off the Western Australian coast. If you don’t have access to your own boat, the team at Dolphin Scuba run dive trips out to popular dive locations. The team are ready to dive all-year round, even during the cooler dive season! Rain or shine, here are some recommended boat diving locations around Perth the WA region.
Rottnest Island
With rich limestone reefs carved into intricate formations by the ocean, Rottnest is surrounded by great dive locations. With ledges, caves, sea life and more to keep you entertained underwater for hours. There are several dive sites ranging in depth to pick from, Rottnest is a great choice for novice to experienced divers. For the braver of the bunch, why not try Opera House aka Shark Cave… located several kilometres off the west end of the island, the dive site is often home to Grey Nurse sharks!
Marmion Marine Park
Located off Perth’s north-west coastline, Marmion Marine Park offers a range of great sites for scuba divers of any experience level. With clear, shallow lagoons and small islands – this local dive location offers some great underwater sights including swim throughs, caves and a diverse range of sea life. Depth varies depending on the dive site with Mettam’s Pool offering a safe snorkelling area closer to shore.
HMAS Swan
Located a few hours south of Perth is one of the largest accessible dive wrecks in the Southern Hemisphere – HMAS Swan. Named after the Swan River, the sunken ship used to be a destroyer escort for the Royal Australian Navy when it was operational. In 1997, the Swan sunk off the coast of Dunsborough to be used as a dive wreck. The ship now sits about 30m underwater and requires an Advanced Open Water Dive ticket or higher to visit.
The Lena
The South West region of WA is home to a number of dive wreck locations, with The Lena wreck site off the coast of Bunbury possessing quite an interesting history. Caught in 2002 for illegally fishing for Patagonian Toothfish in Australian waters 4000km south of Albany, the Lena was chased for weeks before being apprehended. The ship was specifically requested to be sunk off Bunbury’s coastline by the city and now lies 18m down, just a few kilometres off shore.
Key Biscayne
If you want to explore something a little different underwater, the Key Biscayne is a great northern dive location to visit. The dive site is home to an old upside-down oil rig 42m below surface. The shallowest part of the rig sits at 26m so it is an excellent dive location for a certified Deep Diver or higher to explore. The wreck is home to colourful sponges, fans, sharks and more!
