I’ve lost count of the number of people I’ve met who have said that they have always wanted to scuba dive but just aren’t sure that it would be for them. Here’s a secret, you really won’t know how much fun it is until you try it.
Scuba divers learn their skills in the pool first. Ideal if you’re not a bit uncertain, as you are in shallow, protected water and if you need to stand up or get out then you can do just that. Unlike skydiving or bungee jumping, where there is no way of ending the experience once it’s started, with scuba diving you are gradually introduced to the techniques and skills you need to dive comfortably and safely.
Maybe you think that you’ve got be super fit to learn to dive. As long as you can swim 4 laps of the pool and float around for 10 minutes then you’ll be fine. That’s one of the great things about scuba diving, anyone can learn from 12 years old to 70! There are some medical conditions that may need to be checked out beforehand, but diving medicals in Perth are easy to organise and not too costly.
We are blessed in Western Australia; the locations around Perth are perfect for learning to dive, with easily accessible dive sites right off the shore. This is also a bonus once you’ve got your dive ticket as the shore sites are free to dive. Once you’ve completed your Open Water diver course, you and your buddies can go diving for just the cost of hiring your scuba gear.
Scuba diving is not as equipment intensive as people think. Getting kitted out with the right mask, snorkel and fins for scuba is essential but not difficult or expensive, and it’s equipment that can be used for snorkelling too. Once you’ve got your personal gear organised then it’s easy to hire the rest until you’re ready to buy your own.
As Perth has so many good diving spots close to home, learning to dive here is quick and easy. The initial Open Water Diver course can be completed in as little as 2 days or one weekend. Once you’re a qualified scuba diver there are loads of places around Western Australia to explore as well as places overseas to visit.
Becoming a scuba diver opens up a whole world of new experiences, new places and new friends.
