Scuba diving is a fantastic underwater activity you can enjoy all year round. However, when the temperature drops it’s time to trade in the summer skin and opt for a wetsuit with a little more coverage. Whilst you may feel like you’re wearing the swimming attire version of a morph suit, taking proper exposure protection precautions will make your dive more enjoyable and much less chilly! Your wetsuit and additional exposure protection gear will keep your body insulated against the cold so having correctly fitted equipment is essential for diving in cooler water conditions. The experienced team at Dolphin Scuba can make sure you are staying warm in the water by offering expert advice on exposure protection and dive gear options.
Wetsuit thickness
Having the correct wetsuit thickness is vital for staying warm when you are scuba diving in cooler conditions. Without proper protective dive gear, you can run the risk of developing hypothermia. If you are unsure of the neoprene thickness you require, ask our staff in-store or give us a buzz – though best practice is the thicker the wetsuit the warmer you will be in the water.
Snug as a bug
Having the correct wetsuit fit is essential to keeping warm in cooler diving conditions. Your wetsuit should be tight, but not a tourniquet, as you still need to be able to move around in the water! If your wetsuit is too loose, large pockets of air and water will become trapped and cause you to lose body heat more rapidly. If you are unsure of how tight to go, stop by our store as the staff are made up of seasoned divers who can make sure you are buying the correct sized wetsuit.
Always accessorise
The colder the water, the more you will need to cover up and sometimes a wetsuit isn’t enough to prevent a chill. Additional exposure protection such as dive boots, gloves and hoods will make sure your outer extremities remain warm too. When worn correctly, the dive accessories will enable you to stay in the water for longer, and prevent hypothermia from occurring in the colder water conditions.
