Looking to expand your scuba diving wardrobe? There are a range of dive wear options to choose from however one piece of gear you should consider adding to your dive bag is a pair of dive boots, socks or booties. Whilst they all appear similar in name; the three footwear options are suited to different dive conditions. Here are some of the differences between dive boots, dive booties and dive socks.
Dive Booties
Dive booties are a style of dive accessory that cover the feet and vary in their thickness whilst still maintaining their insulation. Dive booties are the hybrid between dive socks and dive boots as they typically have soft neoprene upper-halves and hard bottom soles. They are designed to be flexible and can be worn with open heeled fins as they help to prevent your feet from chaffing and protect your feet against sharp coral and rocks.
Dive Socks
Dive socks or water socks are lightweight and are used to make your scuba dive more comfortable by helping to prevent chaffing when wearing fins. These are a welcomed addition to any scuba divers with sensitive skin who suffer from allergic reactions to rubber-based products. Just like you wouldn’t put on your sneakers without socks, you shouldn’t go diving without dive socks. Dive socks add a little more cushioning around the foot and ankle area, as well as helping to keep your toes warm in colder water conditions.
Dive Boots
Dive boots are enclosed dive footwear that can have either a hard or soft sole. This makes them perfect for shore dives where there are rocks or a reef on entry. Another consideration when purchasing dive boots over booties or socks is the style: zipped or zipless. Zipless dive boots are better suited to cold water scuba divers as they prevent water from getting inside. Dive boots with a zip are easier to get on and off when wet, however, some water can get inside the boot. So, if you’re worried about keeping your toes warm – perhaps opt for the former style.
