PSA: Don’t pollute to keep our oceans beaut!

At Dolphin Scuba, we are true blue ocean lovers that’s one of the biggest reasons why our team is made up of experienced scuba divers. Having a scuba diving qualification means you are able to go out and explore the wonders of the deep.

However, there’s one big thing that landlubbers are doing that could jeopardise our beautiful oceans - pollution.

Our beautiful oceans are becoming increasingly filled with rubbish and in some cases, you’re more likely to swim with plastic than plankton. Here are 10 eye opening facts about how pollution is impacting our oceans in a BIG way.

  1.  • One garbage truck worth of rubbish is dumped into the ocean every minute.
  2.  • By 2020, the amount of plastic in the ocean is expected to increase 10 times over.
  3.  • Much of popular seafood, including trout and perch, has eaten plastic microfibers at some stage.
  4.  • More than eight million tonnes of plastic enter the oceans each year.
  5.  • There is more microplastic in the ocean than there are stars in the Milky Way.
  6.  • Each year, more than one million seabirds, three hundred thousand dolphins, and porpoises are killed as a result of becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets, among other items.
  7.  • Pollution kills one hundred thousand sea mammals each year.
  8.  • Nearly 90 percent of all marine turtles are affected by marine debris.
  9.  • Out of all the ocean pollution, the majority of it is plastic.
  10.  • The most common forms of plastic pollution found in the oceans are discarded cigarette butts, plastic bags, fishing gear, and plastic containers.

The results are in, and they are frightening. There are some things you can do to reduce the amount of rubbish in our oceans. Picking up a few items off the beach, and making sure to take ALL items with you when you leave, can help keep our shores clear from pollution. Making sure you are recycling correctly at home will help keep the plastic from piling up. Every little bit counts. If you want to get more involved in cleaning up our coastlines, initiatives such as Keep Australia Beautiful WA and Clean Up Australia are a great place to start.

The staff at the Dolphin Scuba Welshpool based dive shop are experienced scuba divers who can talk you through the best scuba diving accessories to suit your individual dive needs.

Having knowledge of the local dive area, our team can also advise you on top dive locations to explore the oceans both around Western Australia, and in our international waters.

Our Welshpool dive store is open seven days a week, so you purchase our extensive range of scuba dive gear both in-store or on our online shop.

If you are looking to get out and into the water more often, join us on our weekly group dive by calling the store on 08 9253 2488.
